What Dreams may Bring

Attended the screening with Erina @ Substation over the weekend.

Aside from a mildly disturbing (Erina will disagree though) intro, the main programme dished up an enjoying mix of local short films.

(1) We, the real people of Singapore

The idea of having people providing stories and re-telling them in motion is as new as last week's fresh bake. Yet to select six out of a 100+ stories, script them out and weave them together into an overall narrative structure has its challenges. Authencity aside (I haven't heard of a male pre-school/nursary educator), the flow of the film was well-handled, beginning with the monotony of a day's start, and ending with an excerpt of romantic overtones. The transitions are one of the technical highlights of the film, while the personal favourites are the anecdotes about the boy who took those jibes about being fat in his stride as well as the concluding mini-story. Now, will someone tell me which is the MRT station-cum-bus interchange that has a small ridge next to it where you can catch a beautiful sunset?

(2) National Day

This is perhaps the one that evoked those deep personal emotions, for in Wei, perhaps I saw a bit of myself - outwardly oblivious and inert to the little abrasions in life but inwardly retaining that sense of acute awareness of the little things that matter. No fancy cinematographic effects or post-editing, just an attempt that tugs the heartstrings.

(3) Kissing Faces

Radically different from the previous. Starts with a portrayal of romantic life-of-two in the shape of a Hokkien Karaoke MTV and rapidly degenerates from there (the progatonist's story, not the quality of the film itself). The monologue tells of a separation forced by the promise of a better life abraod, the happier and more unpleasant past, and the hesitation of leaving behind the current arrangement. Building upon neon lights and 'jumps' in scenes, the film is probably let down (IMO anyway) by a lack of research on KTV hostesses, but I presume this allows the director to have a little more room to work with. Sometimes, history and truth can constrain...

(4) à la folie (Like Crazy)

...which I think is the case here as well, which is the director's re-interpretation of Ramayana. Without the baggage of the stories that is Ramayana, there is no attempt to draw comparisons to the original. What I found personally refereshing is the attempt by the director in infusing elements of the different faces that make up Little India. In particular, the scenes which the female protagonist shared with the two female foreign workers provided much food for thought into the psyche of love.

The occasional forays into non-mainstream works are indeed enjoyable and insight-provoking. What an accomplishment it would be, to be able to make and produce your own film!

A Taiwanese in Paris is on a misson and making the headlines.

Objective: To kiss a hundred men in Paris, capture the kisses on photographs, and publish them on her blog.

Sounds crazy obviously.

To some (like some friends of the Taiwanese blogger), kissing 100 men is like going to bed with 100 men. But she went ahead anyway.

After all, how else can one commemerate a journey that has given her the courage and the capability that she hasn't had beforehand?

遇见无情的雨

新的一个月；秋季似乎已降临了。

回营接受了三个多礼拜的受训。评估结果并不理想，但是与排里的死党和一些志同道合的兄弟度过了几分真挚时光 - “凶”时共同患难，享受时一起疯狂。同时，有些在连里的“同胞”则把那三个半星期当作是去度假屋似的，大部分的人在尽力训练时，他们白天在床铺与周公会面，天色一暗就开了车出营。

大家都是战备军人，为何选择逃避，不与曾经和你一起出生入死的同伴齐心协力一起帮助大家熬过这二十多天嘞？

不会忘记这次的开心时光，但也不得不否认，这次的回忆已被心里的失望弄得不完美。

还是没去周末的演唱会。

手头是紧了点，但脑海里和心里还是不想这么快再向商品化的恶势力屈服。

不是我不认可，认同演唱会主角的实力与势力 - 毕竟上两次的演唱会都让我带走了不少感动与欢乐。

事实是，个人已经觉得乐队的上司把他们当成了摇钱树，要趁他们火红时把他们榨干，从而大捞一笔。

还记得鼓手的太太前阵子上了康熙，叙述了自己的丈夫大多时间都不在身旁，聚少离多的这段关系自己听了都心酸；结了婚三年连蜜月都没有喔！要做艺人的终身伴侣还得要很坚强咯！

我还是要澄清 - 我很佩服，敬仰这只乐团，欣赏他们的才华和带动力，但我不认同他们东家的举动。

今天中午的雨害得我变成了只落汤鸡，但也幸亏有了这场雨，我：

（一）吃了一顿饱满（虽然贵了些）的肉骨茶午餐；

（二）经过一些“旧校”式的杂货店，看到一桶一桶的饼干摆放在店面前，我不禁有种走入了怀旧隧道的感觉；

（三）记得身上带着相机，就在巴士上拿了出来，对着窗外的景象随性拍了几下。

仿佛就身处在梦境里。

I used to wonder about the attractiveness of PB&J in the West, until recently when I made them myself for the occasional breakfast. Whenever I wake up late, Grandpa will always remind me to go over to my parents' place for my meal before I leave home. Normally I will dunk two cakes of instant noodles in boiling water (one is hardly enough for me since time immemorial), plus a coffee cuppa, but one fine day, I found this jar of Skippy's Crunchy on the dining table. Sick of having instant mee, and interested and curious enough to try out a PB&J; made do with extra packets of the Big M's grape jam (from those Biggy Breakfast sets), the Skippy's as well as adding a slice of processed cheddar cheese (my own idea - that's what a sucker for cheese will do anyways). Since then, I've been having it once or twice a week; now, given the number of times I'd be around at home for breakfast (i.e. painfully few), I will probably count as a convert to PB&J.And what's the point of all this? I've to ponder if I should get some jam cos the grape jam supply has run dry.

Attended Erina's Commencement ceremony in the afternoon. Used to enjoy attending the aftermaths of these ceremonies, the eruptous joy and endless wide grins that one can observe all around. Today however was marred by one screw-up bigger than the Biggest Screw-up Ever. Could have killed myself thousand times over and it would never have made up for it. Hope that the 'official' shots will make up for it.

Goodness, I have lost count the screw-ups there had been. No one but yours truly would have experienced crushing two snails on a wide pavement within 5 minutes.

I'm truly sorry.

June's been the month where everything happens, like what QZ said. Both Kaka & CR07 jumped ship, the US beat the current form team Spain in a competitive match, EMO jumped ship. And then there's the Surprise Party which had been in the works since April, plus those IPT sessions smacked right in the middle of the flu pandemic (yes I've been to Maju and back countless times). Plus the departing of the Moonwalker, which just means that another part of my history bites the dust.

What other surprises await?

That issue of disparity

I used to (until recently) subscribe to the utopian notion of equality for all in all.

Sometimes, in the face of daunting but concrete evidence, one has little but to face what we call the harsh reality.

The hardcore puritan(s) may still question whether everyone has had tried hard enough, but its an ideal that will probably remain elusive for eons to come.

For most, it has gone down to the inevitability of accepting the role that inequality plays in their lives, and how they go about navigating through the different facades of disproportionateness and adjusting their expectations.

It seems to be an axiom that hard work and effort always reap one rewards at the end of the day (I try to shun away from the usage of 'meritocracy). Those instances that do not are warranted degrees of empathy and consolation, sometimes coupled with grudging aid.

I guess we shouldn't lose sight of those who failed to reach the finishing line with us.

And probably more.

BBC reports on a renewed threat from malaria.

Malaria parasites 'resist drugs'

International scientists say they have found the first evidence of resistance to the world's most effective drug for treating malaria.

They say the trend in western Cambodia has to be urgently contained because full-blown resistance would be a global health catastrophe.

Drugs are taking longer to clear blood of malaria parasites than before.

This is an early warning sign of emerging resistance to a disease which kills a million people every year.

Until now the most effective drug cleared all malaria parasites from the blood within two or three days but in recent trials this took up to four or five days.

The BBC's Jill McGivering, reporting from Cambodia, says it is unclear why the region has become a nursery for the resistance - but the local public health system is weak, and the use of anti-malaria drugs is not properly controlled.

Drug defence

The artemesinin family of drugs is the world's front-line defence against the most prevalent and deadly form of malaria.

Two teams of scientists, working on separate clinical trials, have reported seeing the disturbing evidence that the drugs are becoming much less effective.

There is particular concern because previous generations of malaria drugs have been undermined by resistance which started in this way, in this part of the world, our correspondent reports.

Professor Nick Day is the director of the Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit, one of the teams involved in the research.

"Twice in the past, South East Asia has made a gift, unwittingly, of drug resistant parasites to the rest of the world, in particular to Africa," he said.

"That's the problem. We've had chloroquine and SP resistance, both of which have caused major loss of life in Africa," in said in reference to earlier generation anti-malarial drugs.

"If the same thing happens again, the spread of a resistant parasite from Asia to Africa, that will have devastating consequences for malaria control," he said.

Health systems

Cambodia has long been a laboratory for malaria investigators and a nursery of anti-malaria drug resistance.

Alongside a weak public health system and poorly-controlled drug use, there are many fake drugs, produced by international criminals.

These fakes often contain a small amount of the real drug to fool tests, which can also help to fuel resistance.

Those working to control malaria are calling for urgent action to contain this emerging resistance.

If it strengthens and spreads, they warn, many millions of lives will be at risk. About half the world's population faces exposure to the disease.

North Korean President Kim on 3-day working visit to Singapore

SINGAPORE: North Korean President Kim Yong Nam is on a working visit to Singapore from May 6 to 8.

According to a statement from Singapore's Foreign Affairs Ministry, this is his second visit to Singapore in his capacity as the President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly.

Mr Kim last visited Singapore in August 2007.

And then, there's the relief - Rockets and Yao Ming finally broke free of the restraint that is the 1st Round Playoffs and went through to the Conference Semis; first in 10 years for Houston and first-ever for the Great Wall of China. Now Kobe, Pau and the Lakers await.

And I'm going for my run in a short while - a first in a long time and with some companionship at that. It feels like summer has arrived already. Hah.

Its just so unbelievable that this song can be heard every single night on the same radio programme for almost 2 years(??) 'cos there would be somebody who would have written in to request for this song. In retrospect, its totally cheesy, and probably implicitly pink, but the kick for me probably lies in the melody of the chorus.

The album will probably rank up as one of my worse buys in terms of the quality of songs, but it will always have that reserved place in my memory.

How these two lads have grown...

The week spelt the (premature) end of Pool's run in the CL; granted, it wasn't a classic, it wasn't the rock-solid Pool defence on show (we need some backup for Carra, and Hyypia is not) that typified the past few CL seasons, but the only thing that could be said was that Pool kinda showed it could hold its own - even for a half - without Stevie and quiet Torres. Everyone knew that Aurelio was gonna bang the free-kick straight in after spotting Cech off-position. Pity about the freak cross that Drogs barely got a touch to and Reina spilled in. And nothing but lots of shrugs for the Drogs-show on the pitch.

This "Good Friends" issue has personally bothered me for quite abit. Of course, the real culprit(s) cannot be condoned (Curse the Cold Storage bag and its contents!), but I seriously wonder how much deductive logic this person had utilized in order to pass that patronizing judgment. If there's circumstantial evidence to back her claim, of course it will be undeniable. Thing is, she's probably here for that one and only time throughout the week, and she wanna air her judgment on something that had happened the day before, when she's possibly not even a sniff away from the room? Even if its only a comment to suggest that we had known who left it there previously, I guarantee that either of us would have ensured that the 'stuff' wouldn't have been left around to stink up the room. It just proves once and again how impressions can (erroneously) lead to a decidedly poor judgment. And how some members of our community have effectively mastered the art of FP. Thanks to the cleaning lady who jumped to our defense, if she's indeed on our side. As for you, I wish all the best for your good friends.

The performance came and went.

With each passing concert, the actual performance time spent on stage seems to feel shorter and shorter. I can't say that I'm a seasoned performer, but the last couple of concerts had seem to be over before anyone realised it.

Feels unaccustomed hearing myself play all those higher pitches for a whole concert proper (again). Besides the 2-3 lower Eb-s and those (16 X 2) bars of quarter Bb notes, there wasn't much of bass-y stuff.

Thanks again to those who attended. Thanks also to the section - the 'regulars' all had stuff for everyone else - a bucket, a keychain, cards, rock buns. Also to Ms. Panda and Ms. No-Longer-A-Thug (haha) for their tarts and cards. Most importantly, thanks to Erina for the "maple syrup." =) Didn't manage to have time to prepare anything except some cakes and grapes. Post-concert supper was pretty hilarious, with everyone being entertained by the outgoing VP, who'd been super-highed.

It's been a pretty uncertain period for a lot of people, this 3 months of transition. The applause at the end of the concert came as a relief for all those involved I guess. Any transition needs time, and I guess the apprehension is beginning to thin out, though an exodus (voluntary or otherwise) may be unpreventable. As I approach the end of my 6th year here, I've seen a fair share of changes, arrivals and departures. People come and go, for various reasons. It might have been NUSWS since mid-2003, but every year, the same few challenges face the ensemble, in varying degrees and manifestations. As time passed, it became immaterial (at least to me) to talk about comparison and the 'difference' in standards and such between then and now and the will-be, simply because its a different group presented to the ensemble each time we take to the stage. Its as if we are like some seasonal creature or plant; every June/July and December, the renewal process kick-starts itself, building up to the periods of end-October and end-March. In between, we work out the external and internal changes that have taken place before. When we finally are presented to our audience, we are perceived as the (unified) entity, the one that they'd seen previously and have come to see again. The reality is, we could have undergone some considerable changes somewhere, somehow; whatever happens on the concert days themselves are, in a way, more than mere public performances.

Like some others out there, I will miss the times spent here, the soul, when its my turn.

永别 - 那最后的接纳

有时还真被自己与人类给搞糊涂了。

明明最快速，最直接，最痛快的解决方法摆在眼前，人就是喜欢兜个圈子，绕了大半天，几个星期，数十年，甚至是一辈子，等到离别之前那一刻，彼此才愿意放下心中的包袱，重新接纳。

又或者，对最自己最挚爱的人产生疑问，怀疑，开始质疑另一方的人生方向，又无法也没法去体会，领悟到对方所选择的路对于另一方的意义有何重大。感情一定就要经过磨炼，才能修成果吗？

要（濒临）永别，才能接纳 - 还真矛盾咯！

其实，华人的殡仪习俗也少不了入验师这个角色。当我在星期五下午走出戏院时，回想着婆婆过世的那天，两名像似入验师的一进门来就往婆婆去，在里头弄了感觉上像是好久的时间。偏偏就是因为华人非常的迷信，他人可以倒霉，自己不可以“衰”，大家结果无法目睹入验师如何帮婆婆上最后一次的装。看完了电影后，感觉上就觉得少了作最后一次的道别似的。而现在，法律也规定入验师需要在固定的场所来办理这些礼仪，而入验师上门“拜访”也因此似乎在大众人眼里消失遗迹了。

我们为了寻求增长，还真的放弃了不少曾经是用来标志着我们华人身分的物品，习俗，象征。。。

那一夜，我到了眷村一趟。。。

当历史变得主观，变得个人化，那还是历史吗？

在这变化迅速的年代，私下最贴心的回忆，还经得起大时代的变迁吗？

我们周围还存有几个类似老赵这种乐于助人的品种呢？

上一代的牵挂，就是下一代的包袱吗？

看来，我是个问题男孩。

但是，能不想着这些问题吗？

眷村的历史，精神，庆幸有了《宝岛一村》还有王制作人的纪录片与书籍把一切记载下来。不知何时轮得到他人来帮我那旧住处写本书或是什么类似之类的。。。

记得，那时看了《消逝的记忆》后，回到家来问妈是否还记得十八英里老家在那儿，从她那答案可听得出她对少年回忆的迷茫，失落，遗憾。想必她是多么的能回到童年时的住所，或者是寻找第一次见到爸爸的那一棵榕树（哈哈！这是虚构的！），又可能或者是下课后帮忙外婆卖“Tikkam”的时光。。。现在，就像妈说的，要找都找不到，不知从何着手，因为根本都认不出地方了。。。

当初，上万个像老赵的军人带着家眷和“旅游”，“暂住”的心情，来到了宝岛，从“想回家”，到“思念家”，最后变成“这就是家”。想到自己搬到新住址也快一年了，说好要回去旧住址“拜访”，但是老家那儿已被当局封锁了。真希望老家不会变得面目全非，还想几十年后能介绍一个老头子的老家给自己的下一代（和下下一代）看看嘞！

这一夜，我没落泪。前半场，笑得放纵，下半场，却有几分的无奈。尤其是子康与如云阿姨重逢时，子康问到她这些年来过得如何，如云阿姨的那一句“都快过完啦！”逗得全场笑声连连，自己在心里却有那种又刺又酸的感觉。还有的就是大牛与大毛因周遭环境所带来的背负而间接迫使自己放弃对最初的梦想，最后各自走出了眷村，上了人生这条道路，只是对象已不是彼此。

戏里的角色或许通通都是composite figures，但是，不难想象，眷村里的每一个人都因搬迁到眷村而失去过一些对自己很重要的东西。"Move on" ／“放下”区区两个字，一个词，其中的难度与艰苦，一出两百分钟的舞台剧也只能传达这么多的情感。对自己而言，《宝》提醒了自己因改变而所付出的代价；换来的有苦，有甜，但一切已不能回归原状。

最重要的，或许就是要快乐吧；就算是一个人，也要快乐！

每个人都有一个“天津包子”！＝Ｄ

年兽还没被吓走

过年。每年的初一，初二似乎都过得特别忙，特别快，也因为过于放纵地啃过节零食而罪孽感特别的重。

过节，也有责任要背负。也有人，事物，言语要去应酬。不是不能尽情地享受佳节的气氛，团圆的感觉，而是觉得一个人要达到每个人的期望还真有点"requiring a herculean or superhuman effort"嘞。或许自己内功还没练到第N层的最高境界吧。

过年，过得并没有上述的那么糟。尤其是那时迎接新年前的那一晚。真感谢，也抱歉。

过节，不忘回味过去一年所发生的事。只觉得很幸运结交了一些好友（中学的，大学的，管乐团的，尤其是长号小组的）；因为大家庭失去了一个成员而伤感，但庆幸其他较亲的家人还健康。希望大家在牛年里健康平安，幸福快乐，一起携手并肩渡过眼前的难关。

过年。我这个年龄还在这几天收到红包，还真有点尴尬。已不是当年的小辈了。。。

过节，就来一罐啤酒和几片肉干吧。。。

这周末，走了一回“自由大道”，又陪“公爵夫人”坐了几小时。

当然，有时也会有让人感觉到困惑，不解，奇怪等等的电影，例如。。。

回返之前，绕道去了拉伯多公园。心血来潮，决定去找找看龙牙门当年的所在地。

在夜晚，站在曾经繁忙的吉宝港口的入口处，脑海里在想着-这么小的一个巷道，当年是如何应付天天无数船只的进进出出？那边的情景是如何？阿公是不是当年在这下岸？驻署在这边的英军又如何过日子？

短短的几十分钟，带来了内心的平静，也引来了满脑子的疑问。

最后，在海浪打在礁石的声中，找回平衡。

SAN FRANCISCO - A WOMAN was taunted for being a lesbian, repeatedly raped by four men and left naked outside an abandoned apartment building, authorities said.

Detectives say the 28-year-old victim was attacked Dec 13 after she got out of her car in Richmond, in the San Francisco Bay area.

'It just pushes it beyond fathomable,' said Richmond police Lt Mark Gagan on Monday. 'The level of trauma - physical and emotional - this victim has suffered is extreme.' Authorities are characterizing the attack as a hate crime.

Mr Gagan said the victim lived openly with a female partner and had a rainbow flag sticker on her car.

The 45-minute attack began when one of the men approached the woman as she crossed the street, struck her with a blunt object, ordered her to undress and sexually assaulted her with the help of the other men.

When the group saw another person approaching, they forced the victim back into her car and took her to a burned-out apartment building, where she was raped again inside and outside the vehicle.

The assailants took her wallet and drove off in her car. Officers found the car abandoned two days later.

Gay rights advocates note that hate crimes based on sexual orientation have increased nationwide. There were 1,415 such crimes in 2006 and 1,460 in 2007, both times making up about 16 per cent of the total, according to the FBI.

Avy Skolnik, a coordinator with the New York-based National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, noted that gay, lesbian and transgender crime victims may be more reluctant than heterosexual victims to contact police.

He also said the group plans to analyse hate crime data to see whether fluctuations may be related to the gay marriage bans that appeared on ballots this year in California, Arizona and Florida.

'Any time there is an anti-LGBT initiative, we tend to see spikes both in the numbers and the severity of attacks,' he said.

'People feel this extra entitlement to act out their prejudice.' -- AP

And in a flash, two weeks went by.

Pretty laid back - third gear was almost always never needed.

That's the scary part - laying back too much means the mental state of preparedness for the next ultra-shag one will be even lower.

But till now, it's been an enjoyable two weeks - well almost entirely enjoyable.

First day in a few days without the duty unpaid beer. Feels odd.

Last night @ Harry's Rail Mall was da way to round up the 2 weeks. Lucky my recommendation didn't disappoint. And Guinness Draught from the tap is quite da bomb too.

Everyone's cheerier and more cohesive this time - will be it the same next time round?

No more laughter from the usual gang - not till Aug 09 at least anyways.

Back - for a Reason, and the Reason...

So far, so good.

Except that the competency level with the main weapon - feeling as rusty as the weapon itself, and wondering how I'd completed the same tests with ease and familiarity 10 years ago(!)...

Helps that everyone is showing more enthusiasm than usual - partly cos no one wanna be stuck in camp on Sat waiting for the F16s and etc to finish their landing exercise along Lim Chu Kang Road.

It's more than embarrassing to have to initiate a chat and establishing the identity of someone whose name rings a bell but yet doesn't look all too recognisable on recent photos. In the end, felt pretty glad that I did it, for it was a pretty nice chat. And my oh my, how some people really change, from the good to the (much, MUCH) better - like, probably able to make thrice the number of heads turn on a street as compared to 10 years ago(again!). I should be kicking myself in my dreams tonight, or sometime this week.

Meanwhile... nothing else from me for the nextt few days.

抢先在周末追看了《海角七号》。

一部华人片，但不一定能吸引每个华人捧场。那种注入了浓浓东洋味的华人文化，也只有台湾独有。毕竟，二战的三年零八个月所换来的大多只是战争时的残酷，恐惧与憎恨。长期的逗留，则能带来另一种的感觉，另一种文化上，生活上，感情上的交流与经验，也在生活在那时期的人留下了永不退色的回忆。像我们局外人/“外省人”，最多也只能亲身感觉到那种动荡时代所遗留下来的遗产，要体验，也只能通过像看电影这种被动的方式来试着感觉。

话虽如此，但，我还是很享受在电影院里的那两个小时。单单在配乐与歌曲方面，就已经令我想冲去唱片行买下原声带。大大的《爱你爱到死》有着天真的恋情观念，也有成熟，实际的爱情执著（爱你爱到不怕死，但你若辟腿，就去死一死）。伴着那七封信的配乐动人，伤感 - 我也必须承认，我需要再把电影看多一次，才能真实地感受到那些信，那几段配乐，与阿嘉和友子恋情在戏里的发展。《无乐不作》，《国境之南》，《野玫瑰》单听之下已经不错了，但在电影里的演唱会上，这些歌的原有味道都被带出来，当时在大荧幕前聆听下，体验到了另一种味道，一种在听音乐播放器所无法感受到的感觉。这，也就是我当初没把原声带买下来的原因 - 有些感觉，想必只是在某种环境，某种状态下才能领悟到，感觉到。

乍看之下，电影的题材或许有点太广了。有着成人明恋上即有夫又有儿的老板娘，有着继父与继子说不出的期望，有着一个痴心等待着公主一天能回心转意，回到自己身边的痴心汉，有着盼望能展现自己在扬琴（？）上的才华的国宝，有着两代之间的矛盾，冲突，到最后的共识等等。或许会显得太多，太复杂。个人感觉导演把这些种种关系拿捏了还好，大多数都有所交代，只是或许阿嘉与友子的恋情有点牵强，来得似乎有点突然。也许，暧昧的关系有时就是这么突然，这么偶然，这么意想不到的吧！

走出戏院，唯有一个遗憾 - 自己大部分的时候都在笑。如果在下周末再观看多一次，就要仔细寻找那些信与恋情之间的那种共鸣了。

对了，恒春的景色好迷人，希望在有生之年能去那儿看看！

噢MY天！没机会去追看田中千绘！！！遗憾！！！！（海角七号部分演员在新加坡的行程）

华艺节的节目表已经出来了！

戏剧方面，除了《宝岛一村》（三场），还有香港导演林奕华（《水浒传》）的《华丽上班族之生活与生存》（三场），参与表演的包括了金马影后张艾嘉，王耀庆，还有郑元畅。本地的代表是剧团十指帮的《私房话》（两场）。

“好in：：乐”的参与者，除了曹方是来之中国外，其他表演者　－　卢广仲，1976, 旺福，这位太太　－都是来自台湾。

当然，还有其它艺术团体的演出可值得考虑观看。

据人力部网站的资料显示，明年农历初一在星期一，阴历正月二十七日。好早喔！多两个月而已嘞！

《宝岛一村》要来啦！赖声川大导演又要来啦！

“這是一個生命故事、歷史故事，也是快樂又動人的故事。”

在上个星期的某一天，看到了赖大导演，王伟忠制作人与《宝岛一村》的一些演员上了《康熙》，宣传这部新的舞台剧。

从年初搬了家，到最近看了《悄逝的记忆》后，不但对于属于自己的历史有了更深的兴趣，更多更丰富的情怀，也对于他人如何释怀与曾经属于他们自己一部分的事物和经历告别，产生了兴趣。

月底有一个《海角七号》，明年初就有这个《宝岛一村》。

前晚，在表落格上留言，问了这出戏是否会搬来在华艺节上演。

几个小时前，打开了电邮邮箱，看到了这份电邮：

'All bets off for Las Vegas Sands' in Singapore?

As afternoon storm clouds gather, an almost daily occurrence in wet and steamy Singapore, work goes on as usual at the Marina Bay site of Las Vegas Sands' $4 billion resort and casino project. The earthmovers scoop and dump the soft soil, and workers fan out across the city-state's most coveted piece of land, which girdles the central business district and offers a sweeping view over the emerald waters of the Malacca Straits.

But for the Las Vegas-based casino operator, a full-blown financial hurricane may be brewing. In a Nov. 5 filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Las Vegas Sands revealed its cash was drying up. For the first six months of 2008, according to the filing, the company's earnings were "insufficient to cover fixed charges" by $80.1 million. This gaping shortfall, astonishing for a company that was throwing off more than $600 million in free cash flow annually just three years ago, could trigger defaults on its $8.8 billion in long-term loans. That, in turn, could jeopardize Las Vegas Sands' ability to continue "as a going concern," according to the filing.

Controlled by billionaire Sheldon Adelson, Las Vegas Sands is yet another high-flying company that has been caught out by the global credit crunch and crashing economy. Adelson, who is credited with helping to revitalize Las Vegas with his lavish Venetian and Palazzo resorts, has become a well known figure in Asia, where in recent years he has spent billions building new casinos and hotels in the Chinese enclave of Macau. When Singapore decided several years ago to boost its economy by becoming a tourist destination, the government of the conservative little city-state took the controversial step of legalizing gambling. Las Vegas Sands was tapped to build an anchor casino and resort complex on Marina Bay.

But with the U.S. economy entering recession, gamblers in Las Vegas are growing more reluctant to part with their money. Las Vegas Sands has also been grappling with an unexpected problem: China's government is increasingly alarmed by the profligacy and gambling debt of its citizens. China recently imposed visa restrictions on mainland tourists to Macau, reducing the anticipated cash flow from Las Vegas Sands' Asia operations. According to Daniel Renshaw, a Sydney-based gaming analyst with Merrill Lynch, these twin challenges will be difficult to surmount. "They are relying on an increase in revenue in Las Vegas and Macau over the long term," says Renshaw. "That seems to me a precarious position to be in.

The 75-year-old Adelson, for his part, pledged to personally ensure the "success" of the Singapore casino. "In light of recent turmoil in the global markets," he said in a statement released Nov. 7, "I felt the need to personally reaffirm our commitment to the success of Marina Bay Sands." Apart from announcing that executives from Las Vegas Sands had met with officials from the Singapore government over the last week, however, the statement did not specify what steps are being taken to bolster the finances of his company or its Marina Bay project.

Analysts say the casino is too important for the economic diversification of Singapore, which is overwhelmingly dependent on electronics exports and trans-shipping, for it to collapse. The Singapore Tourism Board may step in either with an infusion of cash or an agreement to assume a sizable chunk of the troubled casino operator's debt. "We are working closely and are in dialogue with Marina Bay Sands [Las Vegas Sands' Singapore subsidiary] to facilitate the completion of the project," says Margaret Teo, Assistant CEO of the Singapore Tourism Board. She declined to provide further financial details.

According to Las Vegas Sands' original proposal, the project, which is scheduled to open late next year, would include 2,500 hotel rooms, 1.2 million square feet of convention and exhibition space, an art and science museum, various theatrical venues, as well as a trio of linked marina-facing botanical gardens. Using the iconic structure as its main attraction, Singapore — which in September hosted the first Formula One Grand Prix race to be held at night — aims to double tourism arrivals to 17 million annually and triple its tourism receipts. "There is no doubt in my mind the Singapore government will come in to ensure the project is completed," says Merrill Lynch's Renshaw. "The government will not let it fail." '

Seems like this particular I.R. will be up and running no matter what.

Its just a matter of how much we are going to fork out from our own coffers for it to happen.

In other news, Southeast Asia's largest bank reports eminent job cuts and shrinking profits.

She proved it - or else we would have been deprived of her folksy and alternative melodies that the masses' ears have greatly welcomed after the tirade of seemingly trash muzik.

What is that guitar?

Sometimes, I yearn for that kind of structured-ness.

Watched another episode of ACI on NatGeo in the wee hours.

Watching the reenactment of Aeroperú Flight 603's last moments had initially filled me with some distraught and bewilderment - how could a descent of nearly 10,000 feet, in 20+ mins, go unnoticed by the pilots?

Naturally, there were a whole bunch of factors involved - a night flight over sea with no visible target of reference, the malfunctioning of various equipment on board, the (mis)information from the Lima traffic control tower (through no fault of the air traffic controller).

Ultimately, it boiled down to a piece of adhesive tape no larger than a regular-sized notebook over the static boards that some ground maintenance crew had forgotten to remove before the flight resumed its journey from Peru to Chile. In short, the tape simply caused the various instruments of the plane to behave weirdly and produce various erroneous messages to both the pilots and the control tower back in Lima, when the plane itself had no major problems. The pilots attempted a 'blind' descent to land back at Lima, realised too late that they were above water, and attempted a late climb back up.

The plane went down into the Pacific half an hour after it had taken off from the Lima airport.

It seemed almost retrospectively prophetic to have caught that show.

That Wedding

The Road Less Travelled had certainly been less travelled. Came out feeling corny, and it resembled something that had pretty rough edges, but it still provided pretty much to ponder over.

Received a call just now - heh, imagine a certain RC talking over the phone with RC - asking me if I could give some sort of a talk about a person whom I hadn't even been acquainted with. "Have you played under me before?..... Do you think you can talk about me?....." sort of thingy. Well, I'm truly apologetic, sire - I don't even think I can talk about yours truly without running into a blank after 10 seconds.

Oh yah! The euphoria that was last weekend.......

Headed to the south for some queue, but ended up empty-handed. It wasn't all of a Hello-Kitty-esque kind of event as I expected, but then the allocation was few and pathetic, to say the least. Sort of a wasted trip.

Drove the family to the Far East for Sis' birthday party. Hadn't driven a car for quite some time, and the first thing I did when I came out of the estate was to drive the car over the road divider and knock down the yellow-black pole that had been on the road divider. The car did not suffer much damage (I hope), but I think my aunt won't let me near the driver's seat ever again.

SAF Holiday Chalets/Bungalows seem to be a good place for a little getaway for the weekend - recently refurbished and renovated and way better than those little NTUC 'cubicles'. Saw plasma TVs showing live football from cable in the chalets. Plus its just off the pristine beach that is Changi. Glad that all went well in the end, she being the only one of us all that organised a 21st party. The downside is that, I think I'm observing more dsyfunctionalities that I've never noticed before, even within myself. Radical and foundation-rocking, it seems.

Thankful that Aaron offered to come down and fetch me to Sengkang. Headed to HS's place first. Pretty simple and cosy setup for the couple, though it'd probably bled them so much of their savings. Headed over next to meet our star of the weekend, and headed for Bliss Cafe at Punggol Park to chill before all the mayhem began. R came down from another banquet and we headed to rest at around 2am. Was trying to hook up to the Net, but it took an nOOb ala me so long to figure out the MAC address of my internal modem that I simply gave up.

By 3am, everyone was up and about. Showered, changed and got ready to head for the bride's place. The bridal car's driver was simply a speedster - we were doing 130 or more on the SLE and still chasing him, the rest of the convoy. By 5, we were already prepared to storm up and into the bride's place. Though there wasn't any food tekan, the negotiation process still took slightly longer than expected. Steven had to go through this interesting Wii game as his penultimate challenge, which I though was pretty innovative. Everything went by in a flurry and we were speeding back and reaching Sengkang before the sun had been up. After breakfast, the tea ceremony and the photo-taking, we konked out for about 2 hours before waking up again for the buffet lunch. And then it was off to the bride's place again by 11am.

We touched down at Holiday Inn Atrium just before 2pm. Headed to the day room where there were more konking up, and I still couldnt hook up to the Net cause the hotel was going to charge for Net access. Showered and changed for the solemnization ceremony at 430, where I met my co-host, who is a lovely lady expecting a child in a month's time.

I guess the dinner itself went ok. Sticking to the script, organising the tables for photo-taking and all. The only thing that I probably didn't do enough was to chat with the rest of the guys - but that could always be done when we meet up again in end-Nov.

Post-banquet, we headed for the bridal suite. The long-anticipated drink fest fizzled out - guessed everyone was simply tired out (in a good way). The hard liquor remained untouched, and we slowly drifted off to sleep.

It was a pretty good experience; hardly anything went wrong, and the married couple just seemed so blissful. Next up for them, a new member to the family! Can't wait to see the little one when s/he comes out!

"'White Rabbit Creamy Candy' Found To Contain Melamime

AVA's latest laboratory findings show that the “White Rabbit Creamy Candy” (大白兔奶糖) from China is also contaminated with melamine. Consumers who have bought the affected products are advised not to consume them.

The latest test results bring the total number of milk and related products from China imported into Singapore that are found to be contaminated with melamine to three. The other two affected products are "Yili Brand" Choice Dairy Fruit Bar Yogurt Flavoured Ice Confection” and “Dutch Lady” brand of strawberry flavoured milk.

All the affected products have been recalled earlier. Since 19 Sep 08, AVA has suspended the import and sale of all milk and milk products from China. These products include milk, ice-cream, yoghurt, confectionery such as chocolates, biscuits and sweets as well as any other products containing milk from China as an ingredient.

Retailers and importers have been instructed to recall these products and withhold them from sale. AVA will not hesitate to prosecute any retailer or importer who fail to remove these products from their shelves. Under the Sale of Food Act, anyone found selling unwholesome food can be fined up to $10,000 and/or sentenced to three months jail, or both.

As a precaution, consumers are also advised not to consume any milk or milk products from China.

Consumers who have any queries can call AVA’s hotline at 63257625 during office hours (8.30 am – 6.00 pm, Monday – Friday).

Jay Chou's latest offering (稻香) is pleasantly surprising, and all the more considering he's putting his self-composed work (melody+lyrics) as the first single off 《摩杰座》. Sample lyrics of the chorus:

对啊！对啊！

没有太接近到卢同学本人，但他也蛮亲切的。只是我们沦落到站在咖啡座外头听他献唱。。。

还有，音乐会准时开始喔！

拉面还真的不错 - 面质恰好，够Q！

看了《岁月》，进一步地相信本地电影事业有前途。

也只有本地电影，才能带出内心的那种归属感。

那场珊为太子抹伤的戏，和小时候补习的地点一模一样。

看到旧款的麦当劳杯子，也有点怀念学生时期的日子。

电影落幕那一刻，令我想起较早前看过的Atonement。对他人的亏欠，每个人都有不同方式的补偿来表达歉意。不只是纯粹把一个最不敢讲的故事搬上大荧幕－现实里不能劝阻你误入歧途，不能帮你挨打挨几个刀伤，不能实现的梦想，都借助了故事里的情节与人物发展来表示自己本身的遗憾与悔过。。旁人所欣赏的怀旧，搞笑，所吸取的道理，教训，对制作人来说，也是一种对自己与对自己的亲人所做的一种个交待。。。

要讲一个最不想讲的故事，不容易。。。

Going down South...

I wish I could have been referring to some erotic novel, but this ain't one.

As the rest of the world brace themselves for a possible meltdown, I'm trying to console myself how I've been treating like a Robert at the Deck during peak periods. The new Indian food stall is attractive enough in terms of novelty, variety and food appearance; customers do deserve a little bit more in terms of speed and attention, as well as the pricing. What's perhaps more disappointing was the Malay food stall of the friendly maciks - I don't mind paying slightly more for Malay food because it seems that that's how it goes everywhere else, but what I'd paid for my most recent purchase took me like a lightning bolt, to say the least. I could probably put it down due to the young, unfamiliar (to me at least) cashier, or the pressure of the lunch crowd 'slam' (knowing it too well), but the latest experiences tell me I should probably head for Chinese economical rice, at least during peak periods, to avoid my unfair share of disappointment.

All's not going down south of course. Two parts of the trilogy gone, and the concluding episode is due on the Singapore F1 GP day (why not Singaporean?). Unlike the first two episodes, the last episode's gonna last an entire day (and some additional expenses in terms of getting a room for 8 of us the night before the big day). It's exciting of course. Roland was telling me about the importance of the formality, that one would not want to regret having not gone through a formality on that grand a scale. And it kinda swayed me over. Of course, it's still a matter or personal choice and/or the wishes of the families of both parties - I guess it goes down to how strong each/both parties feel about the whole thing. Btw, Amara serves good banquet food and quality service, the Legends @ Fort Canning, probably slightly below that of the previously-mentioned.

Ah! The Reds survive their post-international weekend with Rafa's first win against ManU, and then an awesome comeback for StevieG midweek to open Pool's CL account. All it takes to undo every good that came out of those two matches is to get anything less than a win against the newcomers Stoke City (no disrespect, but Pool's highly expected to have a stroll in a park this weekend). Fantasy is total pants though.

[Sidenote: There's a Hulk in the Porto side, and an Aragon in the Standard Liege. Bring on the desserts, gentlemen.]

It all ended up -ffo-, for no reason at all. Of course, it'd been an evening whereby there are quite a few who'd taken quite a bit of stick and endured some untold (because of out of their 'obligations') grievances - they certain deserve a certain amount of recognition and respect. Without losing the macro perspective, however, by the time the everything had been over, it was just all flesh and no spirit. Of course, the subconscious might well be tuned-in all along, but for now, the inner escapist reigns - not that he'd not been around recently anyway. For now, Recoil and Retreat, no Replay.

最近933进行了个小改革；当中，推出了“金曲playback”，在每小时里都回播出一首昔日金曲。

在下午时段，听到了这首歌。是那些你知道在你心中曾经留下深刻印象，但却因某种关系（歌手的名字好难记，不够出名/帅/美，那种种的烂理由。。。）而一直都无法记得歌曲/歌手的名字。今天，通过“金曲playback”，我终于发觉唱这首歌的歌手的名字了- 周葆元！

（喜欢或者听过这首歌，似乎反映了自己已经老了。。。哎。。。）

在网上要听到这首歌曲还不简单嘞 - youtube 和 imeem 都没有。幸好，歌手还有粉丝喔；歌曲取之于粉丝的部落格。。。

Industrial explosion startles NUS

Students from the National University of Singapore were momentarily jolted by the sound of a loud explosion that came from an industrial area near campus at 2.23 p.m. today.

Senior Staff Sergeant Wong Kah Yip from the Clementi neighbourhood police centre said that the sound was caused by an accident that happened at the Pandan Industrial area.

Wong added that the police are still investigating the cause of the accident. He was unable to comment on the number of casualties involved or the magnitude of the accident.

The explosion could be heard from as far as the Faculty of Engineering, but it was at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences where the impact was most felt.

People who were in Central Library heard the sound which was immediately followed by a tremor that lasted a split second.

Glass panels at Central Library also reportedly shook from the impact of the explosion.

A management assistant at the library who wanted to be known as Selvi said, “The whole building... I could feel it. Everyone stood still.”

“It was only for a moment but it’s very very scary,” she added.

Rahimah, an assistant librarian, said she saw the glass panel shaking and thought for a brief moment that someone was knocking on the glass panel from behind.

Linda Perry, a communications and new media professor from NUS, said she witnessed the explosion from her apartment.

“There was a large ball of smoke, almost mushroom shaped, right after the explosion. Also rattled my windows.

“The smoke dissipated quickly, whatever it was,” she said.

No injuries have been reported on campus as a result of the incident.

Basker, a campus security officer, said, “So far all the sections are clear on campus.”

He added, “We’ve checked the whole area and confirmed this.”

It'd been a pretty loud-sounding 'bang,' if anyone had heard it. I had jumped out from my seat when it had first occurred on Tues.

Back in Time - Pasir Panjang Pillbox

Everytime I travel along Pasir Panjang Road (most of the time on bus rides to Vivo/Town), I will never fail to take a second look at this particular landmark outside the entrance of this end of Science Park:

(Taken whilst on the bus with the Nokia; the gal just happened to be there...)

This particular WWII monument certainly had seen its fair share of action; I can picture the scenes some 60+ years ago, with enemy forces creeping around the area and fighters from the Malay Regiment inside the pillbox manning the machine guns and gunning down whoever had approached it on one hand, and worrying that they might be surprised by the sheer numbers of the enemy force on the other hand.

In this modern reality, set against the bustling landscape that is the Science Park and nearby PSA Terminal, who would have known what had actually taken place in and around this pillbox during those days and nights of early 1942, and how the men defending the pillbox felt like during that period of time?
