Through the Looking Glass...

An earlier draft had been about something I read online, regarding some issue about how Singaporeans' livelihoods had grown dependent on foreigners. Perhaps what we had been pushing for is coming back to haunt us. I is no economics guru, nor philosophy shifu, not even a political nutcracker (Whatever that means), but it seems that an economy and environment overly reliant on manpower and heavily indulging in pragmatism requires constant adjustments and shifts in perspectives, such that any state of equilibrium is never prolonged. How many times have we been caught a step or two behind - A means you missed out on A+, 99 is 1 short of excellence, not par excellence, a degree no longer enough when you finally attain one, a discipline that has lost its relevance and cutting edge/advantage the moment you'd mastered it, savings (CPF and all) dried up when you reach "retirement age", realising that "retirement age" is a misnomer, a term that only a fortunate (and possibly rich) fraction of the population can claim for themselves - the list is ever productive. Just as the previous generation had rushed in to displace and transform the British colony into Malaya/Malaysia then independence, now the new wave is in the midst of displacing the older generation of thoughts and perspectives. Of course, no one owes us a living, our lives, our livelihoods. The blame game, when played, is certain to be never-ending. But then, not every factor or condition can be isolated on its own and given a diagnosis and prognosis - The cleaning auntie has seen wages dropping because tenders are awarded to the contractors who submitted the lowest bid, she has no choice but to continue working because its a job with a low-entry barrier. Send her to skills-upgrading courses, yes. But she has to give up after the first class because she needs to go around the neighbourhood collecting drink cans and cardboard boxes after her daytime cleaning job, as well as cook for the family. The course requires her to sit for written tests and evaluations - when she is illiterate. She finally managed to pass one of the courses, and finds that her new employer had won the tender again, using an even lower bid, which means a new reduction in wages. And she has to pay for the course she had gone through. And she faced stiff competition from the overseas contingent who are younger, faster and don't mind the low(er) wages. Cycles of slight variations are taking place; the bullets that have to be bitten keep getting larger in calibre...

I better go practise washing latrines, wash basins and toilet bowls, or perfect the arts of sweeping and moping the floor, or come up with a method to wash crockeries fast and efficient - or maybe I'm too late already???

------------------

A second birthday celebration in as many weeks.

Perhaps an over-dosage of not-slow food is killing my taste buds - even Sarpino's and KFC no longer have the slightest lure.

Post-celebration, I'm reminded of Honours year.

Wasn't close to everyone, but at least gotten to know everyone (I is one of the initiators for the contact list).

We hanged around together often in Hons Rm - lunch takeaways, Scrabble, Magic, group discussions, gossip, essays/ISMs/HTs deadlines (LAPD reminded me of singing the night away while churning out the our HT/ISM - when will that EVER happen again?!)...

In fact, we didn't really study together alot. Or rather, few are as crazy as me to be drawing the room key every evening and holding on to it over the weekends. But the few moments that we do get together for serious work and studying, I think we had been productive. At least for those who cared enough to drop by often. We might not have been the brightest, but we had been THAT TIGHT.

We met up before heading to our examination venues, we headed back to the room after the exams, grumbling/bitching/discussing (whichever way you look at it) about the exam questions and our answers, the support we provided for one another, the joys of it all. Heck, we even had a mass karaoke session after the very last ELang paper (Multilingualism) - even those who had finished a day or two earlier came down.

And I'm reminded of all these tonight. And I'm glad I'd gone through that part of my life with these people; probably nothing else that I would exchange for those memories.

It's not purely nostalgia, it's probably regret - that one hadn't done more.

McDonaldisation

Frequenting the Golden Arches like nobody's business - where else can you find locality convenience, air-condition, electrical power points, food and drinks (albeit at not-worth-for-money prices), relative solitude, under one roof?

One word - BOBIAN.

---------------

Friday night - out watching late-night movie with QZ, YB and Boo. Initially headed for Cineleisure, but Beowulf had sold out, and the later shows are so much later. Felt pretty much displaced, 'cos everyone there was dressed with a glam factor of 10 and above. Everyone else looked the same to me - the blings, the plunging necklines, the done-up hair. Without anyone noticing it, it felt like Cine has become a mega-club without the liquor and music.

Anyway, we headed for Cathay, and thankfully, it wasn't half as crowded.

Christmas lightings are up:

Boo sent me home on his new scram - my longest journey as a pillion yet.

I wanna ride. RIDE ON!

---------------

The most eventful thing on Saturday (barring Russia's incompetence at Israel) was the trip to Traffic Police HQ. Being pillion made me impulsive, and I enrolled online at BBDC for Class 2B.

Unfortuantely I still have to produce my driving license upon official registration, so I decided to go take some passport-size photos and zoom down Ubi to try my luck.

Weird that the Traffic Police HQ is located in the heart of an semi-industrial estate, though it doesnt look half as old as the ones like what we have here in Jurong. Anyway, the on-duty guy must have secretly laughed all the way to JB inside him that a weirdo-desparado wanted to do a replacement driving license at 2200hrs on a Saturday night. He advised me to come back during office hours - and I left then.

Took the new KPE on the way back - just for the experience.

---------------

Nothing pretty much transpired on Sunday - not much headway for the conference handout.

The neighbourhood's getting quieter, as households prepare for a mass exodus upon their "collection of keys" to their new apartments. So much so that Mum is getting hyped up and anxious over when it will be our turn. For me, I dread that day.

---------------

I guess I'm still behind times - this song must have been around for ages.

This lady from Malaysia, I have to say, quite talented.

Eid ul-Fitr

The co-authoring officially got down to work on Sat afternoon. Probably done what we could have done already before we left. Brings one back to those days of slogging it out for assignments/tests/exams during undergrad days.

Dinner was at the "new" Marche at Vivocity - organiser had decided that the queue for Kim Gary's just too insane. Might as well - the last time I was scheduled for dinner at Marche, it wasn't ready to open for business yet.

Interior decor has to be the nicest, outshining the previous ones at Heeren and Suntec. Never really liked it at Heeren anyway - seemed like an underground meeting place of sorts. Here, you are most likely to be rubbing shoulders with those at the next table, but the spatial dimension doesn't threaten to overwhelm and dwarf the diner. Menu might be limited, but there're new attractions as well, such as the paella, the Swiss cross buns (my mum gave them the thumbs-up and thought they cost $4 each), rosti with mushrooms. Left all of us bloated to the extreme. *BURP*

Coffee at GJ's, chatting by the waterfront (always unforgettable, ever since...), then trying to catch the last train/bus home। The qunatity might not be there, but the quality of the company and the intensity during the course of the evening is something one probably couldn't achieve with numbers.

500th

The 500th entry.

What has changed? What remained? What needs to be changed?

---------------

An ultra short weekend - thank goodness for the rain.

Spent Friday afternoon + early evening in the new room for grads with QZ and Naga. I realised I, like Naga, missed the couch in the Hons room. ALOT.

Galvin called and we decided to meet at JEC. The nasi lemak at the new Deck made me ultra sick. Naga and I were overly engrossed in analysing chess moves on his laptop that we forgot to alight at the interchange until everyone else had alighted and the bus driver had switched off the lights.

Waited for Galvin - when he reached, we headed for pool:

Was at GWC on Sat. Had Yoshinoya, Cedele, B&J's and then nasi padang. Bought replacements earphones - at a freaking 68 bucks. Headed back to grad room for the night.

---------------

Nothing much on Sunday. Gonna head for the coffeeshop after I'm done with this 500th though.

Yah, I'm probably politically apathetic, but then, I don't want to reach a conclusion that early marraiges and unplanned pregnancies are the problems pertaining to a specific portion of the population, or worse still, this portion inherently "carries" these problems.

Naming your child - NOT!

As narrated to me by almost-a-teacher friend, still faced with a mountain-load of comprehensions to mark going into the last week of practicum:

"Wah, if my surname is BU, I would name my child Mark Bu Wan Ah...."

I don't know whether to laugh, or pity the hypothetical child - but I think I did both.

Post-mortem

Mad rush on Saturday evening.

Dempsey Road seems to be a cool place to escape to on a Saturday evening, away from the bustling and jostling crowd at nearby downtown.

Sweet whites = German-origin (Riesling).

Ask to test wines when you are buying them.

Made a wrong decision - headed for downtown via Orchard and kenna ERP 2x! Next time should take the Tanjong Pagar route.

Dinner. Was. Very. Filling. (But I still had Macs for supper. Hah.)

A "competition" can reveal alot about life.

That reputation and past glory only counts for this much in a current context.

That amount of effort one puts in does not equate to what the result one might hope to obtain in return.

That there's no shame in losing.

That losing with grace is an art form that is highly difficult to master.

That one can learn from others as much as one can learn on one's own.

That one should learn to accept professional evaluation/critique in one's stride.

That humility is another art form that belongs to the same league as the art of losing with grace.

Had a nightmare on Friday night / Saturday morning.

I had dreamt that I had had woken up on Saturday morning, only to find that my laptop was not really 'mine' - someone had slipped in to swap the bottom portion of my laptop with the bottom portion of another laptop of unknown origin.

Humans are weird - sometimes, when they know that its obviously futile to do something without being able to achieve the desired outcomes, and yet they still devote their 101% attention in attempting.

And that was what had happened in my dreams - meself frantically going through the C:\ to check if the intruder had been kind enough to help me transfer some of my files over before scooting off.

Woke up and ran over to check my laptop, which was of course still in its original configuration. Maybe I had been paranoid because of the unfamiliar faces hanging out in Hons room the same time as I had been.

------------------------

Had a quiet Sunday afternoon + a relatively good evening - Hons outing @
Waraku - with sumptuous food, semi-private function room, healthy turnout (15 was the last count for dinner; 8 for pool), and lots of catching up. Kudos to hardworking + charismatic Diana for getting her hands busy organising this one, and suggesting the venue of course.

The lesser said about pool, the better.

Note: Blurry photos are purely due to the incompetencies of the cameraman.
