Strife

What is wrong with me? Haha...

Yesterday met Dear after a long day for a little shopping trip; she got me a Nalgene bottle! Thanks Dear! =) Had makan at Siam kitchen, well, based on my one-off experiences at JP Siam Kitchen and Holland V Thai Express, I say: Thai Express has the edge...

Today: Social thought's about Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin (1895 to 1975); heteroglossia, diaglosim and double-voicing, phenomena that you and I probably employ every other day, without knowing the technical sociolinguistic explanation. Let's state an example:

"I admit that the matter can be handled better throughout the whole process; the decision to buy more flutes was made at a time where we had a huge influx of Yr 1 flautists. While it seems that there could have been more room to accomodate for more instruments, we faced constraints on a few fronts..."

3 clauses were underlined; first, 'I' made an admission on his part about a decision gone wrong; second, 'we' here indicates that the protagonist is stating a claim on behlaf of the organisation that s/he belongs to, possibly lending weight to his/her argument; ditto for the last eg...

One more example...

"... we have highlighted it to XXX. We are considering to smelt it to scrap metal to make some money and together with the new budget that will be out in July, we might be able to get some new ones. "

Note that there are 3 instances where 'we' occurs. First and Second 'we' refers to a subgroup organisation that the protagonist is representing and speaking behalf of... the third 'we' refers to the whole organisation, in which the subgroup is part of.... the protagonist is speaking on behalf, and the third 'we' is used in an instance to appeal to the whole org becos there seems to be a benefit for the org on the whole based on the decision made by the subgroup, though whether the subgroup actually made that decision (or just the protagonist alone) remains to be proven.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is double-voicing. A piece of dialogue that the speaker seemingly means to represent what s/he is saying, but actually speaking for another party...

(Ok enuff of double-voicing. and enuff of my own double-voicing)

Thanks to everyone who has shown their support and encouragement; dun fret! Our spirit will not be extinguished by 2 mere egoistic, bimbotic, self-centered individualistic (or dualistic???) somebodies...

Signing off........ We live to face another day, another challenge.......
