"Quake strikes Indonesia's Flores island
Posted: 09 September 2006 1413 hrs

JAKARTA : A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Flores island in eastern Indonesia on Saturday but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, officials said.

The quake, which struck at 11:13 am (0413 GMT), was centered some 163 kilometres (100 miles) east of the town of Labuan Baju, an official from the Meteorological and Geophysics Office told AFP.

There is no danger of a quake-triggered tsunami, he said, as the tremor was centred 500 kilometres beneath the Flores Sea.

"It's too deep, there is no potential for a tsunami," Muhaimin told AFP.

The US Geological Survey measured the quake at a magnitude of 6.2.

Indonesia, which sits on the "Pacific Ring of Fire", where continental plates meet causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity, was the nation worst hit by the December 2004 Asian tsunami.

"Strong quake rocks Flores Sea

JAKARTA (AP): A strong undersea earthquake rocked Flores Sea in Eastern Indonesia Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of damage, and the quake did not immediately trigger a tsunami alert.

The 6.2 magnitude quake was deep under the Flores Sea, 205 kilometers northeast of Sumbawa island, the survey said in a statement.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," a string of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

A 9.1-magnitude earthquake on Dec. 26, 2004, off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra Island triggered a tsunami that killed more than 131,000 people in Aceh province, and more than 100,000 others in nearly a dozen other countries. (**) "
